What’s Your Sign?
In the dating world, it is quite common these days to meet someone, only for them to ask after finding out your name: “What’s your sign?” While some indulge in the rage about the zodiac signs, there are others who take it seriously. It is taken so seriously that some people do not marry someone unless they “rule under a certain sign”. As a new year approaches, men and women turn to the stars to discover what lies ahead for their love-lives and careers. Some turn to zodiac signs to determine people’s personality and even the suitability of their partners for them. Some have gone as far as to break up relationships because, they say, “Scorpios have a toxic trait.”
As the new year approaches, there are also some who are depending on their horoscope to tell them what’s ahead. A horoscope is an astrological chart or diagram representing the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, astrological aspects and sensitive angles at the time of an event, such as the moment of a person’s birth. This is believed to bear significance for future events relating to that person’s life.

The Difference between Astrology and Astronomy
The American Astronomical Society (AAS) explains the difference between these two areas of study: “Astronomy is a science that studies everything outside of the earth’s atmosphere, such as planets, stars, asteroids, galaxies; and the properties and relationships of those celestial bodies. Astronomers base their studies on research and observation. Astrology, on the other hand, is the belief that the positioning of the stars and planets affect the way events occur on earth.” If you are interested therefore in the galaxies, comets, the relation of the stars to the planets and so on, then you are an astronomer; the study of these things with the belief that these things influence the events in the earth (and your life) makes you an astrologer. Astronomy is a field in Science, but Astrology is sin.
What does God say about this?
While astrology has become popular through the use of zodiac signs in pop culture, tatoos, in music and as a trendy personality test, it is not wise to indulge in such practices. What does God say to those who use astrology for guidance for their love lives? We see the answer in Isaiah 47:13-15 (NLT) “All the counsel you have received has only worn you out! Let your astrologers come forward, those stargazers who make predictions month by month, let them save you from what is coming upon you. Surely they are like stubble; the fire will burn them up. They cannot even save themselves from the power of the flame. These are not coals for warmth; this is not a fire to sit by.” God sees the predictions of astrologers as worthless, and he tells his people that astrologers cannot even save themselves from the dangers ahead. Their advice is worthless. In God’s eyes, those who rely on zodiac signs and horoscopes to predict their lives are using worthless information to steer their lives.
We see a couple of instances in the Bible when astrology failed to produce any result whatsoever, so how useful do you think it will be for your love-life? King Nebuchadnezzar asked his astrologers and wizards to interpret his dream, and they flatly told him they could not do so and that nobody on Earth could do such a thing. (See Daniel 2:10) On the other hand, through prayer, Daniel was able to provide an answer, and He says something so profound which gives us the answers we need to go forward: Daniel 2:27-28 NKJ “ Daniel answered in the presence of the king and said, “The secret which the king demanded the wise men, the astrologers, magicians, and the soothsayers cannot declare to the king. But there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will be in the latter days…”. Daniel sought the Lord for an answer and God showed him the meaning of the dream. If you need to know your future, consult the one who holds the future and the stars in his hands and not the ones who cannot even save themselves from their own destruction. There is a God in Heaven who reveals secrets!
God does not want his people to get involved with any act of divination, and this includes astrology. When the Israelites were entering the Promised Land in Canaan, God said to them in Deuteronomy 18:9, 12 and 14 “Do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there…The nations you will dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery or divination. But as for you, the Lord your God has not permitted you to do so…Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord.” Divination is the practice of seeking knowledge of the future or the unknown by supernatural means, and it is regarded as a serious sin in God’s eyes. 1 Samuel 15:23 “Rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.” To God, it is detestable to get involved with things like these.
In the new Testament, the Apostle Paul cast out a demon from a woman who practiced divination. Acts 16:16 “And it came about while we were going to the place of prayer that a certain servant-girl having a soothsaying spirit met us, who was bringing about a large profit to her masters telling fortunes. This one, while closely following Paul and us, was crying out, saying, “These men are slaves of the Most High God, who are proclaiming the way of salvation.” And she was doing this for many days. And Paul, having been greatly annoyed and having turned to the spirit, said, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to depart from her!” And it went out at the very hour. Those who claim to predict the future through divination of any sort are engaged in demonic practices.
The Implications for your Love-Life?

Using unreliable data will result in the wrong output. When you consult an untrustworthy source from your information, you are very likely to end up with the wrong results. The stars cannot tell you who people are or what they are likely to do. People are just people with ranges of personalities, social backgrounds and experiences who choose to do what they want to do and to be how they want to be as their mind chooses. There is no perfect personality. Libras and Leos, Cancers and Capricorns and all others are distinct people who have to deal with the problem of sin. No matter what month a person is born, if their life is not transformed by the power the Holy Spirit and the renewing of their mind (Romans 12:2) they will sin against you, be unforgiving and problematic. In God’s eyes, all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). People all need saving, and that is why He sent Jesus Christ to save us. Instead of looking at the stars to determine the way forward or the kind of man or woman you should connect with, you should look instead to the one who makes the stars. No matter how the stars are aligned right now, they cannot determine what happens for you next year- good or bad. Instead you must “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean unto your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6). He is the one who can reveal to you the way forward and he will help you to discern the heart of a man or woman since he looks at the hearts of men. In my new book Not a Single Shade of Grey, I share scriptural guidelines on discernment for those hoping to enter into a relationship. As it pertains to zodiac signs and other astrological means of determining your life, 1 Thessalonians 5:22 tells us to “keep away from everything that even looks like sin.” (NLV)

The stars have nothing lined up for your future or for your love-life, but thankfully, the giver of every good gift is the revealer of secrets and He wants to steer your life in the right direction! You can always consult your Heavenly Father, the most accurate Source for what you need to do in the coming year, and He can help you to find your purpose, help you to understand your own personality and help you discern between the good and bad in life and in people.

I have always had this issue with hearing people speak about ” what sign they are”. It made me so uncomfortable to know that this is not necessarily what God wants to hear coming from our lips. I am happy for this blog as it shed so much light on this topic!
